Learn about the history of the creation of its borders and border treaties. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#004f5e;color:#004f5e\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Defining a country&#8217;s territory is always an extremely delicate and important action, as each nation has its own needs and interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to define the territory of Costa Rica, it was necessary to create several treaties, as a result of the dialogue between the different countries bordering Costa Rica. All this occurred due to Nicaragua&#8217;s discontent with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/en\/guancaste-annexation-of-nicoya\/\">https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/en\/guancaste-annexation-of-nicoya\/<\/a> to Costa Rica. On top of that, none of the border treaties of previous years had been able to mitigate the tensions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve their relations, Nicaragua sent General M\u00e1ximo Jerez Teller\u00eda, Plenipotentiary Minister to San Jos\u00e9 to try to negotiate a new agreement. Costa Rica then appointed General Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Ca\u00f1as Escamilla to conduct the dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treaty was approved days after the meeting by the majority of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asamblea.go.cr\/SitePages\/Inicio.aspx\">Congress of Costa Rica<\/a> and received the approval of the Constituent Assembly of Nicaragua. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Border with Panama<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/yosi-bitran-jVCXlJrnl5w-unsplash-1024x567.jpg\" alt=\"How were Costa Rica's borders defined? This negotiation was carried out between the Costa Rican foreign minister Alberto Echandi Montero and the Panamanian ambassador Ezequiel Fern\u00e1ndez Ja\u00e9n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boundary dispute between the two countries began in the 19th century since Panama claimed as its own the Mosquitia territory (from the Sixaola River to Cape Gracias a Dios). In turn, Costa Rica claimed the territory from Escudo de Veraguas Island, in the Atlantic, to the mouth of the Chiriqui Viejo River, in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the occupation of the Bocas del Toro region by New Granada in 1836, Costa Rica and Panama signed several agreements to try to resolve the border disputes. However, both countries finally agreed on the Echandi-Fernandez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treaty establishes a free navigation regime for both countries on the Sixaola and York\u00edn rivers, in the part where they serve as a border. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maritime borders <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alexander-schimmeck-Aohf8gqa7Zc-unsplash-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"How were Costa Rica's borders defined? This agreement was signed in 1985 by the chancellors of both countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colombia <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Costa Rica borders Colombia in the Caribbean Sea according to the <strong>Facio-Fernandez Treaty<\/strong>, signed in 1977 by the Ambassador Plenipotentiate of Colombia in Costa Rica and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also the <strong>Guti\u00e9rrez-Lloreda Treaty<\/strong>, signed in 1984 between the foreign ministers of Costa Rica and Colombia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement formally establishes the border limit in the Pacific Ocean between these two countries. In addition, it is the first international recognition of the marine and submarine areas that Costa Rica declares as belonging to it, based on Isla del Coco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Panama<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there is the <strong>Calder\u00f3n-Ozores Treaty<\/strong> of 1980, which delimited the borders corresponding to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sensorial Sunsets<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How were Costa Rica&#8217;s borders defined?
