{"id":12865,"date":"2023-12-11T16:33:25","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T22:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/?p=12865"},"modified":"2023-12-11T16:33:26","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T22:33:26","slug":"more-dengue-fever-serotypes-in-costa-rica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/en\/more-dengue-fever-serotypes-in-costa-rica\/","title":{"rendered":"More Dengue Fever Serotypes In Costa Rica"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>During the month of December, an increase in dengue fever serotypes three and four has been reported in Costa Rica.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#004f5e;color:#004f5e\"\/>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>According to a report of serotypes identified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inciensa.sa.cr\/inciensa\/centros_referencia\/virologia.aspx#:~:text=The%20CNRV%20is%20responsible%20for%20coordinating%2C%20a%20level,Virus%20of%20Nile%20Western%2C%20Parvovirus%20B19%2C%20Herpes%206.\">National Virology Reference Center<\/a>, 2,305 cases of dengue were confirmed since November 28 of this year. It was identified that there is a predominance of circulation of serotypes DENV3 and DENV4 over the serotypes of typical circulation in our country: DENV1 and DENV2.<\/p>\n\n<p>The two new dengue fever serotypes were reported for the first time since last year. <\/p>\n\n<p>According to the Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate, it was reported that during the week of November 20-26, Costa Rica registered 24,941 cases of dengue fever. <\/p>\n\n<p>In Costa Rica, the regions with the highest number of dengue fever cases reported are: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Huetar Caribe region (6055 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North Central region (5592 cases) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chorotega region (3819 cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Also, the cantons with the highest number of dengue fever cases registered in 2023 are: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Puntarenas (2300 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alajuela (2134 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sarapiqui (1617 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Siquirres (1591 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pococ\u00ed (1535 cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>San Carlos (1376 cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is dengue fever?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The dengue fever can be considered a viral disease, typical of tropical areas and transmitted by female mosquitoes of the <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> species or, to a lesser extent, by the <em>Ae. albopictus<\/em> species. <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"During the month of December, an increase in dengue fever serotypes three and four has been reported in Costa Rica.\" class=\"wp-image-12841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-334x222.jpg 334w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti-1320x880.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aedes_aegypti.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito, identifiable by its white stripes on its legs. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>An estimated 40,000 people die every year worldwide as a result of dengue fever. <\/p>\n\n<p>Approximately 4 billion people (almost half of the world&#8217;s population) live in areas where dengue is present: America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Islands. <\/p>\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the cause of dengue is a virus of the <em>Flaviridae<\/em> family with four serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4. <\/p>\n\n<p>All four dengue serotypes exist in the American continent and sometimes circulate at the same time, which explains why a person is infected several times. <\/p>\n\n<p>In addition, it is commonly referred to as two types of dengue: mild (or classic) and severe (or hemorrhagic). <\/p>\n\n<p>Dengue causes fever, headache, nausea and vomiting. It can also cause rashes, swollen glands, body aches and pains, usually behind the eyes, in the muscles and joints. <\/p>\n\n<p>In mild cases of dengue fever, symptoms usually last 2 to 7 days. Most people recover. <\/p>\n\n<p>As for severe dengue fever, it should be detected in time to prevent it from becoming complicated. For this, the following symptoms should be watched for: pain or tenderness in the stomach, constant vomiting, bleeding from the nose and gums, presence of blood in vomit and stool, and a feeling of increased fatigue. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can be done to prevent this?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Dengue is an endemic disease, which means that it is constantly present in the region. This complicates the possibilities of eradicating it. <\/p>\n\n<p>For health authorities and scientists, the best thing to do is to avoid the reproduction of the mosquito that transmits it: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>storing water in closed containers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>avoiding wells, water puddles and unsanitary conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>promoting fumigation campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In addition, it is recommended that people wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs, insect repellent and sleep with mosquito nets or fans, especially during the rainy season. <\/p>\n\n<p>These measures not only reduce the chances of the spread of dengue, but also of other diseases such as Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Sensorial Sunsets<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the month of December, an increase in dengue fever serotypes three and four has been reported in Costa Rica.
