Costa Rica, known for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation, is home to four species of monkeys that add charm and vitality to its lush rainforests. These species are:<\/p>\n\n

The mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata)<\/h5>\n\n

They are known for their powerful howls that can be heard more than 5 km away.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They have a specialized stomach that allows them to digest leaves, their main food source. Depending on their diet, they spend up to 20 hours a day resting and digesting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
The white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator)<\/h5>\n\n

This species is known for its intelligence and versatility. Also they use tools such as stones to open fruits and branches to remove insects from trees.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They live in complex social groups with a dominance hierarchy. Females remain in the group for life while males disperse at maturity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
The Central American squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii)<\/h5>\n\n

They live in large groups of up to 50 individuals. In order to maintain body temperature, they sleep tightly packed in groups.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n
The Geoffroy’s spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi)<\/h5>\n\n

They have a prehensile tail that they use as a fifth limb to swing between branches. It can hang from it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They are the largest monkeys in Costa Rica, measuring up to 90 cm long and weighing up to 9 kg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n

These arboreal creatures inhabit diverse ecosystems, from dry to rainforests, and feed mainly on leaves, fruits and flowers, although some also consume insects and small vertebrates.<\/p>\n\n

Social Behavior & Adaptation<\/h3>\n\n

A variety of behaviors within their groups, such as playing, fighting, communicating, and grooming, are highly social. These behaviors strengthen group hierarchies and ensure social cohesion.
