This is based on the hypothesis that melanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration, can bind to heavy metals present in the marine environment.<\/p>\n\n<p>As predatory animals, sharks can accumulate these contaminants through the food chain, meaning that changes in their pigmentation could be directly related to exposure to these toxic compounds.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Expedici\u00f3n del proyecto internacional SHARKSense-CIMAR UCR\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BP7mlsdBLAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<\/div><\/figure><br>\n\n<p>SHARKSense seeks to determine whether pollution is influencing the evolution of individuals with darker skin through comparative studies in different regions of the world, including Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expansion of research in national waters<\/h3>\n\n<p>Between 2025 and 2026, data collection in national waters will be expanded, strengthening knowledge about the country&#8217;s marine biodiversity and providing valuable information for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n<p>ACG is a living laboratory for pioneering research on pollution and sharks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acguanacaste.ac.cr\/biodesarrollo\/programa-sectores\/area-marina-de-manejo-bahia-santa-elena\">Bah\u00eda Santa Elena Marine Management Area<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Each expedition reaffirms the role of the ACG as a natural platform for scientific research, which is key to understanding and protecting biodiversity on an increasingly threatened planet.
