This internationally recognized research center is dedicated to studying the species present in the country, as well as the characteristics and composition of their venoms. The main objective is to develop antivenom serums or antivenoms that can effectively treat the effects of venomous snake bites.

Diversity and classification

Costa Rica is home to an impressive diversity of reptiles, of which snakes represent about two-thirds. Of the 140 identified species, only 23 are considered venomous, belonging to two main families:

Elapidae, which includes one marine species (Hydrophis platurus) and five species of coral snakes of the gender Micrurus.

Viperidae, with 23 species distributed across eight genera (Agkistrodon, Atropoides, Bothriechis, Bothrops, Cerrophidion, Crotalus, Lachesis, and Porthidium).

Snakes of the Viperidae family, commonly known as rattlesnakes, are distinguished by their triangular head, rough scales, and the presence of loreal pits, heat-sensitive structures that allow them to detect prey. For their part, the venomous coral snakes of the Elapidae family are smaller and thinner, and have a bright color pattern with red, yellow (or white), and black rings.

The acronym R.A.N.A. and its educational value

In Costa Rica, the acronym R.A.N.A (Rojo-Amarillo-Negro-Amarillo, or red-yellow-black-yellow) has become popular as a mnemonic device to remember the order of the colored rings on venomous coral snakes of the genus Micrurus. This strategy aims to facilitate the identification of the most common species and differentiate them from false corals, harmless snakes that mimic their coloration.

Serpent corail d’Allen

Central American coral snake

Serpent corail d’Allen

Although the acronym is not foolproof, it is useful for environmental education and accident prevention.
