Covering an area of 19,800 hectares, this park safeguards one of Central America’s most valuable wetlands and serves as an essential refuge for hundreds of species of flora and fauna.

After weathering one of the most severe wildfires in its recent history, the park officially reopened its doors to the public, once again allowing visitors to enjoy its extraordinary biodiversity and unique landscapes.

A natural treasure of international significance

Palo Verde National Park receives an average of 1,230 millimeters of rainfall annually and has an average temperature of around 28 °C, conditions that support a remarkable diversity of ecosystems.

Its ecological importance extends beyond national borders, as it protects one of Central America’s most significant wetlands, recognized internationally by the Ramsar Convention for its immense value to the conservation of waterbirds and other organisms that depend on these ecosystems.

The park is also home to some of the last remaining areas of neotropical dry forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems in the region. Its name comes from the tree known as palo verde, which is easily identifiable by the characteristic light green color of its bark and branches.

An extraordinary diversity of flora

The park’s vegetation consists of two ecological zones that support more than twelve different plant communities. To date, more than 750 plant species have been identified, including iconic species such as the palo verde, the pochote, the bitter cedar, and the majestic guanacaste. In addition, the park protects five of the six mangrove species found in Costa Rica, making its wetlands vital ecosystems for the reproduction of fish, birds, and numerous aquatic organisms.

More than 280 species of resident and migratory birds inhabit its various ecosystems, many of which are considered rare or have small populations. Among the most representative species are the red-billed trogon, the black-capped manakin, the peacock, the toledos, various species of falcons, ducks, and great blue herons, as well as a wide variety of waterbirds that find the wetlands an ideal place to feed and breed.

Amphibians and reptiles also exhibit remarkable diversity. Nearly 55 species have been recorded, including the grass snake, the bequer snake, the rattlesnake, and the coral snake, as well as crocodiles, iguanas, and garrobos. As for mammals, about 150 species have been identified, both flying and terrestrial, in addition to 19 species of fish that round out the park’s biological diversity.

The wildfire that threatened the sanctuary

In late May 2026, Palo Verde National Park faced one of the wildfires largest on record in the area in recent years.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of May 28 when a lightning strike, caused by a dry thunderstorm, struck inside the park. The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) reported that the flames spread rapidly due to the large amount of dry vegetation typical of the wetland.

From the very beginning of the emergency, high temperatures, strong winds, and an abundance of combustible material made it extremely difficult for forest fire crews and emergency response teams to contain the blaze. As a preventive measure, authorities decided to completely close the park to the public.

More than 4,000 hectares affected

During the first few days of the fire, there was no definitive figure on the extent of the damage, although preliminary estimates put the affected area at between 200 and 400 hectares. However, as the emergency unfolded, the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) confirmed that the fire ultimately consumed nearly 4,000 hectares, approximately one-fifth of the park’s total protected area.

The columns of smoke rose several hundred meters into the air and were visible from kilometers away, driven by the strong winds typical of the region.

The difficult conditions also affected the firefighters. The Red Cross reported that 26 wildland firefighters required medical evaluation due to prolonged exposure to smoke and intense physical exertion, although none needed to be transported to a hospital.

Impact on Wildlife

The impact of the fire was not limited to the loss of vegetation. Images shared by the Fire Department showed scenes of adult deer fleeing with their fawns, entire families of coati moving through the vegetation, and the rescue of a turtle affected by the smoke. Experts noted that these types of fires profoundly disrupt the ecological balance, destroy habitats, alter food chains, and affect both biodiversity and the environmental services provided by wetlands.

An Unusual Fire

The Palo Verde case became one of the most representative examples of a wildfire season considered atypical in Costa Rica.

During that period, the country recorded 233 wildfires that affected more than 30,868 hectares, representing a 264% increase over the previous year.

According to experts, the fire was particularly unusual because the rains in late May typically reduce the risk of fires in Guanacaste considerably. However, in 2026, temperatures remained between 36 °C and 37 °C, accompanied by relative humidity of around 40%, conditions that kept the vegetation dry and contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Palo Verde Welcomes Visitors Once Again

After bringing the emergency under control and conducting the necessary assessments, the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area announced the official reopening of Palo Verde National Park.

Currently, the park is open to visitors every day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., allowing visitors to once again explore its trails, go birdwatching, navigate its wetlands, and discover one of the country’s most important ecosystems.

The reopening represents an opportunity to continue promoting responsible tourism and to strengthen conservation efforts for this invaluable natural heritage. At the same time, the recent fire serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting ecosystems from the effects of climate change, extreme weather conditions, and the growing risk of wildfires, which pose an ever-increasing threat to Costa Rica’s biodiversity.

Sensorial Sunsets

Located between the Bebedero and Tempisque rivers, in the Lower Tempisque Basin, in the canton of Bagaces, Guanacaste, Palo Verde National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most important protected wilderness areas.
