Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates around the world. In the United States, for example, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, a date that became popular thanks to Anna Jarvis’s initiative in the early 20th century. In Costa Rica, however, the celebration has a fixed date: August 15.<\/p>\n\n

Anna Jarvis’s initiative sought to establish a day dedicated to honoring mothers. In May 1908, she organized one of the first official Mother’s Day celebrations in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign subsequently helped lead to the official recognition of the holiday in the United States in 1914, when the second Sunday in May was designated as Mother’s Day.<\/p>\n\n

Over the years, Jarvis expressed strong disagreement with the growing commercialization of the celebration, as he felt it was straying from the personal meaning he had originally intended to give it.<\/p>\n\n

In Costa Rica\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

In Costa Rica, mothers’ day is celebrated every August 15. Its official origins date back to 1932, when Law No. 79 was enacted on August 10 of that year.<\/p>\n\n

The law established Mother’s Day in schools, colleges, nursing homes, and state-run charitable institutions, with the aim of honoring Costa Rican mothers. It also designated August 15 of each year as the fixed date for the celebration.<\/p>\n\n

The initiative was linked to the Nicol\u00e1s Ulloa School in Heredia and was later endorsed by the government of the time, during the presidency of Ricardo Jim\u00e9nez Oreamuno. This celebration continued to be carried out in schools and other institutions throughout the country. The regulations were subsequently amended by Law No. 4627, dated August 3, 1970.<\/p>\n\n

For this reason, it is incorrect to state that Costa Rican Mother’s Day began in 1998 or that it was established as a national holiday by President Miguel \u00c1ngel Rodr\u00edguez in 1997. The official celebration had existed for several decades prior.<\/p>\n\n

Why is August 15 celebrated?<\/h5>\n\n

August 15 coincides with an important celebration on the Catholic calendar: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which commemorates the belief that Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul. Costa Rican Mother\u2019s Day was established on that same date in 1932, so the two celebrations coincide on the calendar.<\/p>\n\n

A mandatory paid holiday<\/h3>\n\n

August 15, Mother\u2019s Day, is a mandatory paid holiday in Costa Rica, according to the Labor Code. Workers are entitled to the holiday and, generally speaking, are not required to work on that day. If a person works during the holiday, they must receive the corresponding pay in accordance with their workplace\u2019s pay structure.<\/p>\n\n

In cases of weekly pay where only days actually worked are counted, a single day\u2019s pay corresponding to the holiday must be added. If the employee works on that day, the additional pay must be double.<\/p>\n\n

At workplaces that pay monthly or biweekly, the holiday pay is already included in the corresponding paycheck. If an employee works on August 15, a single day\u2019s pay must be added to bring the total to the double pay required by law. If overtime is worked on the holiday, it must be paid at the rate applicable to overtime worked on a holiday.<\/p>\n\n

The true meaning of this day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Mother’s Day began as a celebration intended to recognize and honor mothers. However, its history is also tied to various social initiatives related to women, motherhood, and peace.<\/p>\n\n

Anna Jarvis herself eventually became one of the leading critics of the commercialization of Mother’s Day. In the decades following its creation, she spoke out against the use of the holiday for commercial purposes and believed that gifts, flowers, and cards could overshadow the personal significance of the day.<\/p>\n\n

This story invites us to reflect on how celebrations can take on new meanings over time. Mother\u2019s Day can be an occasion to recognize the work and contributions of mothers, but also to remember the challenges that many women still face and the various forms of violence and discrimination that exist in society.<\/p>\n\n

Celebrating motherhood can also be an opportunity to discuss women\u2019s rights, shared responsibility for caregiving, and the need to prevent violence against women.<\/p>\n\n

Let us remember<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Violence and discrimination against women is a global problem. <\/p>\n\n

In Costa Rica, the Judiciary maintains statistics on domestic violence and violence against women. Official data show that 46,383 cases were filed in domestic violence courts in 2017, compared to 48,607 cases in 2016. Therefore, it is incorrect to present the figures of 3,503 and 4,611 from the original article as the total number of domestic violence cases recorded in those years.<\/p>\n\n

Regarding violent deaths of women, according to the classification by the Inter-institutional Subcommittee on the Prevention of Femicide as of June 22, 2022, 63 violent deaths of women were recorded in 2021. Of these, 18 had been classified as femicides, 18 as homicides not classified as femicides, and 27 remained unclassified at that time, pending additional information or review.<\/p>\n\n

Violence against women can take many forms, including physical, sexual, psychological, verbal, and economic violence. Recognizing these forms of violence and promoting relationships based on respect and equality are also part of building a safer society.<\/p>\n\n
