The music and the lyrics of the current national anthem of Costa Rica date from different dates.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of the National Anthem of Costa Rica<\/h2>\n\n<p><b>The Music<\/b>&#13;\n&#13;\n\u00a0&#13;\n&#13;\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other neighboring countries, Costa Rica did not have an anthem. In June 1852, Juan Rafael Mora Porras received the visit of important diplomatic missions from Great Britain and the United States and requested the creation of an anthem for that day. Don Jos\u00e9 Joaqu\u00edn Mora, brother of the president, asked the young musician Manuel Mar\u00eda Guti\u00e9rrez, general director of bands and director of the San Jos\u00e9 Military Band, to compose the music for a National Anthem for Costa Rica. Legend has it that the composer Manuel Mar\u00eda Guti\u00e9rrez had to compose the music of the anthem locked up in a cell, for refusing the order given by the president to compose the anthem in twenty-four hours. <\/span>&#13;\n&#13;\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At noon on June 11, 1852, at the Government House, the San Jos\u00e9 Military Band played for the first time the notes of the National Anthem of Costa Rica. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The music had to wait 127 years for its officialization, and it was not until September 1, 1979 by means of decree N\u00ba 10471-E, being president Rodrigo Carazo, that the respective decree was promulgated.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b>The Lyrics<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curious fact: there were three different lyrics before the current one. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first lyric was written by the Colombian poet Jos\u00e9 Manuel Lleras and premiered in 1873. In 1879, the second was by the seminarian from Cartago, Juan Garita y Guill\u00e9n. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third was written in 1888 by the Spanish pedagogue Juan Fern\u00e1ndez Ferraz, with arrangements by Jos\u00e9 Campabadal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 2, 1903, President Ascenci\u00f3n Esquivel Ibarra held a public contest. On August 24, 1903, a jury awarded the prize to the young poet Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda &#8220;Billo&#8221; Zeled\u00f3n. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On June 10, 1949, President Figueres Ferrer, by decree No. 551, officially declared the letter.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/800px-Musica_del_Himno_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica_1-742x1024.jpg\" alt=\"himno-nacional-costa-rica-sensorial-sunsets\" class=\"wp-image-2332\" width=\"598\" height=\"825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/800px-Musica_del_Himno_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica_1-742x1024.jpg 742w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/800px-Musica_del_Himno_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica_1-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/800px-Musica_del_Himno_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica_1-768x1060.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sensorialsunsets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/800px-Musica_del_Himno_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica_1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><figcaption>National Anthem of Costa Rica<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern Controversy over the Lyrics<\/h2>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2010, a controversy was sparked by the lyrics. In fact, the hymn sings: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;you will see your people, brave and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the rough tool in weapons change&#8221; and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;in the tenacious struggle of fruitful work that reddens the face <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;, thus excluding Costa Rican women. Of course, this letter was written in 1903 at a time when men dominated the whole of life in Costa Rica.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#13;\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case was taken to the Constitutional Court, when a woman filed a complaint requesting the modification and modernization of the lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Author<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: M.
