His interest began with his father, who worked at the courthouse and would bring him a comic book when he went to pick him up after receiving his paycheck. Those gifts sparked his curiosity about the characters and their adventures. This family tradition marked the beginning of a passion that continued into adulthood.

As he grew older, he wanted to discover the endings of the stories he had read as a child. In particular, he wanted to find out how Hulk’s adventures ended. To do so, he began searching for the missing issues and gradually expanded his collection to include other characters from the Marvel Universe.

A Collection Built Around Complete Stories

For Federico Castro, collecting comics is not simply about accumulating issues. His main goal is to follow characters’ stories from their origins to a point that he considers a satisfying conclusion.

His collection includes characters and series such as Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, Namor, Ant-Man, the X-Men, and Wolverine, among others. His interests span different publishing eras and series related to these characters. He also collects companion publications, stories connected to their respective universes, and material related to action figures and other collections.

When asked which comic book holds the greatest sentimental value for him, his answer reflects the connection he feels with his entire collection.

There isn’t one that’s more important. They’re all, as they say, equal. I care about all of them just as much, and there are so many that it would be difficult for me to choose a specific one

Castro does not select comics primarily based on their price or whether they are first editions, either. His main criterion is the story. He wants to follow the characters’ continuity and understand how their relationships, conflicts, and enemies evolve over the years. For this reason, he prefers stories that belong to the main continuity of each universe. He is generally not interested in alternate versions but rather in publications that allow him to trace a character’s journey.

According to Castro, the monthly release schedule of American comic books has generated an enormous amount of material. In his view, not every publication maintains the same narrative quality, so he selects those he considers important to understanding the overall story.

He estimates that he has collected approximately 80% of the publications from that period, although he is still searching for missing issues to complete several series. His preferences also extend to the medium itself. He does not collect anime and enjoys comics in both black and white and full color. He considers the search for a specific issue one of the most exciting aspects of the hobby. Finding a missing issue, trading with another person, and gradually getting closer to completing a series are experiences that give collecting its meaning.

For him, owning a physical comic offers a different experience from reading on a screen.

The process of searching for it, finding it, and preserving it is also part of the satisfaction of collecting. His experience shows that collecting is not limited to acquiring objects. BOOKAFEST to Bring Costa Rican Authors and Publishers to Comic Con

Daniel Fernández Masís, founder and organizer of BOOKAFEST, will participate with titles such as Testigo de mi muerte, Las vidas de un día and Travesía de dos hermanos. His work spans crime thrillers, short stories, adventure and dystopian fantasy.

Participants will also include Le Fernández, author of Essence, Enlace, Silencio and Única. Her writing combines elements of fantasy, dystopian fiction and romance.

Andrea Zúñiga, creator of the young adult trilogy Aryadians, will also take part in the event. Her series combines action, adventure and fantasy. Meanwhile, Floria Álvarez will present her work from the fantasy saga El regreso de las reinas, which includes the books Aire, Tierra and Fuego.

The independent publisher Geniality+ will also participate. Its catalog includes works by emerging authors, such as Otrevor: Herederos de la luz y las sombras, by Luis Roberto Rodríguez. Although details vary from one version to another, these stories form part of Costa Rican folklore and offer insight into how communities have used imagination and popular beliefs to interpret things that once seemed inexplicable.

Why Is Escazú Known as the City of Witches?

There is no single, definitively established explanation for the origin of Escazú’s nickname. Over time, various accounts have emerged in an attempt to explain how the canton became associated with stories of witchcraft.

One popular interpretation links this reputation to the presence of folk healers and women who understood the medicinal properties of plants. In communities where traditional healing practices played an important role, some of these practices may have aroused suspicion and fueled stories about supposed supernatural powers.

Another version, found in publications devoted to Costa Rican history and folklore, connects the legend to religious gatherings that were allegedly misunderstood by others. However, this explanation should be understood as one of the accounts surrounding the origin of the nickname, rather than as a confirmed historical fact.

Piedra Blanca: A Place Associated with the Witch Zárate

In the district of San Miguel stands Piedra Blanca, a rock formation that occupies a prominent place in traditional stories associated with Escazú. Its significance in local folklore is partly due to its connection with the witch Zárate, one of the best-known figures in Costa Rican legends.

Zárate is attributed with enchantments and extraordinary powers, and various stories place her in rocky locations that serve as hideaways or magical spaces. Piedra Blanca in San Miguel is among the places associated with these tales, although the witch is also linked to other locations throughout the country.

In some local versions, Piedra Blanca is also said to be the home of the Tulevieja, another figure from Costa Rican popular folklore. One story tells how a farmer managed to capture her and take her to the Church of San Miguel Arcángel. The details of this encounter vary depending on the version of the legend.

Coral Bleaching and Its Consequences

Corals have a close relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which live in their tissues and provide a significant portion of the energy they need. This association supports the growth and maintenance of coral reefs. When water temperatures remain above the levels corals can tolerate for an extended period, their relationship with these algae is disrupted. Corals may expel the algae and lose their characteristic coloration. This phenomenon is known as coral bleaching.

During your visit, you may encounter mammals, birds, reptiles, and a wide variety of plant species. However, wildlife sightings depend on environmental conditions and are never guaranteed.

The park has authorized overnight accommodation and camping areas in the Sirena and San Pedrillo sectors, subject to reservations. These facilities should not be confused with free camping, as visitors must follow the rules established for each sector. A visit requires advance planning. Entry must be arranged with the Osa Conservation Area, and visitors must be accompanied by an authorized guide on routes where this is required. Sirena also offers meals and accommodation by reservation.

3. Chirripó National Park, Talamanca Mountain Range

A Cultural Mosaic

Costa Rica’s history has been shaped by the influence of different cultural groups. These include Indigenous peoples from the Mesoamerican and Intermediate Areas, with strong Caribbean influences, as well as the arrival of the Spanish, who in turn brought Sephardic Jews and Africans.

This cultural mixing was reflected in food, both in the variety of products and in the ways they were prepared. Indigenous peoples primarily used corn, beans, tubers such as potatoes, cassava, and ñampí, as well as squash. The Spanish, meanwhile, introduced milk, cream, butter, cheese, rice, wheat, sugarcane, and new animals.

Later, thanks to the coffee boom in the mid-19th century, many immigrants arrived in the country over the following 100 years. They came from Spain, Italy, Syria, Greece, Lebanon, Turkey, southern France, the United States, Jamaica, Aruba, the Bahamas, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Poland, as well as from Asia. To a lesser extent, immigrants also came from Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Cuba, Colombia, Peru, and Argentina. Together, they helped shape the multicultural character of Costa Rican cuisine, which had already been diversifying since pre-colonial times.

Indigenous Cuisine

All this cultural mixing has created a common culinary foundation throughout the country, based primarily on dishes such as gallo pinto, casado, picadillos, olla de carne, gallos, empanadas, tamales, fresh fruit, and coffee.

Of course, each region has its own characteristics, mainly shaped by the availability of specific products and cultural influences. The Caribbean, for example, is known for strong flavors with spicy and sweet notes, influenced by coconut, ginger, chile panameño, plantains, and other ingredients. These elements come together in dishes such as rice and beans, plantain tart, rondón, patí, and others.

In Guanacaste, rice, corn, meat, fermented foods, and the traditional clay oven play a central role, giving rise to preparations such as tanelas, chichas, and pozol. Puntarenas, on the other hand, stands out for its freshness and acidity, with dishes such as ceviche, vigorón, and churchill.

In the central region, we find seasonal products such as pejibaye, itabo flowers, and chiverre, which are combined with corn, rice, beans, eggs, meats, potatoes, and other ingredients to create casados, empanadas, gallos, soups, and many other dishes. All this versatility brings us to the present day.

A Taste of Contemporary Cuisine

Despite having, as we have seen, a rich culinary heritage, there are not many restaurants dedicated specifically to Costa Rican cuisine. However, we should not confuse the traditional food mentioned in the previous section, represented by the thousands of sodas and traditional restaurants throughout the country, with restaurants that seek to reinterpret these traditions using local products and focusing on creativity and experience.

Nevertheless, interesting culinary proposals have emerged throughout the country in recent years. In July 2020, Joan Roca, one of the world’s leading chefs, said that “we must start thinking with a greater awareness of sustainability. Recycling, reusing, and wasting less food. This will encourage people to create authentic dishes rooted in their culture and their land, making the most of what they have. And if all chefs begin to understand this, it will become a trend: being authentic and cooking with what you have nearby. Differentiating yourself from other places by doing your own thing, not only based on your region but also on your own way of understanding your cuisine.”

In Costa Rica, this trend has gradually become more established. Restaurants, as well as suppliers and producers themselves, are contributing to its development. They seek to generate broader benefits through a holistic approach that goes beyond commercial interests. They want their products to stand out because of what they represent, the networks and partnerships they create, and the creative process behind the final product.

This results in better products and healthier processes, creating a synergy between chefs and producers that allows for greater creativity and integration.

Understanding a product is key to knowing how to use it in the kitchen. Cas, for example, is a fruit that is highly representative of Costa Rica. It is characterized by its refreshing flavor and its combination of acidity and sweetness. We can compare it to a lime and use it in ceviches, pair it with seafood, or even combine it with rich proteins such as pork. We can also make cas barbecue sauce, among other preparations.

This trend is only beginning to take hold in our country, and we are all responsible for helping it grow. We can do so by supporting small-scale producers, visiting local businesses, and encouraging those who seek to do something different through gastronomy while highlighting national products.

A Different Kingdom

For a long time, fungi were considered part of the plant kingdom. Modern science, however, recognizes that they have their own characteristics and classifies them in a separate kingdom: Fungi. One of their distinctive features is the way they obtain nutrients. Instead of ingesting food, fungi release enzymes that break down the material around them. They then absorb the resulting compounds.

Fungi do not have mouths or stomachs. Their bodies are made up of filamentous structures called hyphae, which group together to form the mycelium. Through their hyphae, fungi release enzymes capable of breaking down the substrate where they grow. This process allows them to obtain nutrients from materials such as wood and plant remains. Fungi also have characteristics that make them more closely related to animals than to plants in some respects. Their cell walls contain chitin, while they produce ergosterol, a compound that differs from the cholesterol found in animals.

An Inventory That Is Still Incomplete

Although Costa Rica is home to nearly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, fungi have received less attention than other groups of organisms. For years, many biodiversity inventories did not adequately include them. Research efforts have helped advance the identification and documentation of species found in the country. These records provide valuable information for understanding Costa Rica’s biological richness and for environmental impact studies and conservation efforts.

The figure of 6,500 species is significant when compared with other countries. Canada, whose territory is about 195 times larger than Costa Rica’s, has approximately 10,663 documented fungal species. The Netherlands, which is similar in size to Costa Rica, has around 5,000 documented species. These figures also highlight how much remains to be investigated, particularly in tropical regions, where biological diversity is especially high.

Why Are Fungi Important?

In ecosystems, fungi break down organic matter and help return nutrients to natural cycles. They can also influence populations of other organisms. Some species limit the growth of certain plants and help maintain ecological balance.

Their importance also extends to various human activities. Fungi have applications in medicine, industry, and environmental protection. Penicillin and cyclosporine, for example, originated from compounds produced by fungi. Their enzymes are also studied and used in processes related to the production of paper, detergents, paints, and textiles.

Researchers are also exploring fungal applications for producing alternatives to Styrofoam and developing products with a lower environmental impact. Some species can help break down certain pollutants, while others are being studied as potential sources of compounds with medical applications.

Fungi in the Greater Metropolitan Area

Records from the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) provide a glimpse into the diversity of fungi found in this region. So far, 187 species have been documented, belonging to 111 genera and 58 families. Of these, 15 belong to Ascomycota and 172 to Basidiomycota.

The recorded genera include Cookeina, Puccinia, Trametes, Geastrum, Auricularia, and Ganoderma. The GAM is also home to species of culinary, medicinal, and industrial interest. Edible fungi include Pleurotus ostreatus, Cookeina speciosa, and several species of Auricularia. Others, such as Ganoderma and Pycnoporus sanguineus, are of medicinal interest.

Toxic species are also present, such as Chlorophyllum molybdites. However, the available records do not yet represent the region’s full diversity. The 187 documented species correspond to approximately 51% of the 365 species estimated for the GAM using the Chao-1 richness estimator. Microfungi are likely among the least documented groups. Their small size can make them difficult to detect during field research, meaning that many species may go uncollected.

A World Still Waiting to Be Discovered

Current knowledge represents only a small part of the fungal diversity that could exist in Costa Rica. If the estimates are correct, 96% of the country’s fungal species have yet to be discovered. Expanding these inventories will provide a better understanding of Costa Rica’s biodiversity and the role these organisms play in ecosystems.

It could also help identify new applications in fields such as medicine, industry, and environmental protection. Fungi are part of essential natural processes and, at the same time, represent one of the major groups of biodiversity that Costa Rica still has to explore.

The phenomenon is already being closely monitored by scientists because of its potential effects on temperatures and rainfall. In Costa Rica, its impacts tend to vary depending on the country’s different climate regions. This is compounded by the latest sub-seasonal forecast from the National Meteorological Institute (IMN), valid from September 28 to October 25, 2026. The institute forecasts a rainfall deficit across much of the country during this period.

October Could Bring Drier Conditions

The outlook issued by the IMN changes as October progresses. Between September 28 and October 11, dry conditions are expected in the Pacific and Central Valley. During those weeks, the Caribbean, Northern Zone, and Northwest Northern Zone are expected to remain within normal conditions for this time of year. The situation is expected to change from October 12 onward, when the IMN forecasts the expansion of drier conditions to other parts of the country.

Between October 12 and 18, the North Pacific, Central Pacific, and Central Valley are expected to show the strongest signals, with conditions classified as very dry. The South Pacific, Caribbean, and Northern and Northwest Northern regions are also expected to experience drier conditions. During the final week covered by the forecast, from October 19 to 25, the dry pattern is expected to extend across the entire country. The North Pacific, Central Pacific, and Central Valley would remain among the areas experiencing very dry conditions. This forecast covers a period of several weeks and does not mean that it will stop raining throughout the entire period. In fact, the IMN has also recently reported humid conditions, heavy showers, and thunderstorms in different parts of the country.

How Is This Scenario Related to El Niño?

El Niño is part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate pattern resulting from interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere. One of the factors used to identify and monitor its development is the surface temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Temperature variations recorded in the Niño 3.4 region help determine whether El Niño, La Niña, or neutral conditions are occurring, as well as the event’s intensity.

Its effects are also not uniform across Costa Rica. The Pacific generally experiences lower rainfall and higher temperatures during El Niño events, while the Caribbean tends to receive more rainfall. The distribution of moisture changes as the phenomenon alters atmospheric circulation. For this reason, understanding the effects of El Niño in Costa Rica requires considering both the region and the time of year.

A Natural Phenomenon That Should Be Distinguished from Climate Change

El Niño and climate change are both related to the climate system, but they are not the same phenomenon. El Niño is a natural variation in the ocean-atmosphere system that has occurred for centuries. Climate change, on the other hand, refers to a sustained warming trend primarily associated with human activities.

The possible influence of global warming on the intensity or effects of El Niño remains under study, although there is no conclusive evidence establishing a direct causal relationship. This distinction is important because it allows forecasts to be interpreted without automatically attributing every change in temperature or rainfall to a single cause.

Water availability could become one of the main concerns during a dry period. The needs of communities, agriculture, and other sectors must be met with a water supply that can vary depending on rainfall and local conditions.

In this context, IMN forecasts provide a reference for monitoring how rainfall could behave over the coming weeks. The forecast currently extending through October 25 indicates that the deficit could become more pronounced, particularly in the Central Pacific, North Pacific, and Central Valley. However, conditions can change, and forecasts should be consulted as they are updated.

Preparing Also Means Understanding Uncertainty

The possibility that El Niño will continue developing does not mean that all of its effects can be known in advance. The phenomenon’s eventual intensity and its behavior over the coming months depend on how the climate system evolves. For this reason, the available information should be used as a planning tool rather than as an absolute prediction.

For the agricultural sector, this distinction can be important. Waiting until a drought or period of excessive rainfall fully develops limits the available response options. Consulting forecasts, assessing local conditions, and preparing alternatives can help producers make decisions before persistent changes in the climate result in greater losses.

An Island Surrounded by Legends

Cabuya’s connection with the island dates back to pre-Columbian times. According to local tradition, Indigenous communities used this small piece of land to bury their dead. When the Spanish colonizers arrived, the site continued to serve as a cemetery.

This history also gave rise to various legends. One local story says that ghosts inhabit the island and appear at night. These stories become especially vivid when funerals take place after dark.

On these occasions, mourners may make their way to the island carrying candles or lights. From the elevated areas around Cabuya, Los Cedros, Delicias, and Montezuma, the lights appear to move across the sea. This scene has added to the mysterious character surrounding Isla Cementerio.

How to Reach Isla Cementerio

Access to the island depends directly on the tides. At low tide, a rocky stretch between the coast and the island becomes exposed, allowing visitors to cross on foot. Before setting out, it is important to check the tide schedule and plan the return trip. Sea levels can change quickly, and the crossing is not accessible throughout the day.

The walk takes place under the sun and over rocky surfaces. For this reason, it is a good idea to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and a hat. Visitors should also walk carefully to avoid slipping. Once on the island, visitors can see the graves and enjoy views of the coast and the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve.

Snorkeling and Marine Life

The waters surrounding the island also offer opportunities to observe marine life. The area has hard coral formations and a variety of fish species.

The northern side of the island is one of the area’s snorkeling spots, especially at low tide. You do not always need snorkeling equipment to enjoy the underwater scenery. Fish of different colors can also be seen in the pools that form among the rocks.

Species found in these waters include pufferfish, lobsters, octopuses, and sea turtles. Wildlife should be observed without disturbing the environment. If you lift a rock to see what is underneath, it is important to put it back in its original position. Fishing is not part of the recreational experience at this site.

The Road Between Montezuma and Cabuya

Isla Cementerio is part of a coastal route connecting Montezuma with Cabuya and continuing toward Cabo Blanco. The journey passes several beaches and natural areas of the Nicoya Peninsula.

One of the first highlights is Playa Las Manchas, a small cove with light-colored sand and clear waters. Visitors can swim and observe the seafloor when conditions are suitable. Farther along the coast is Playa Los Cedros, known for its surfing conditions. Its shoreline combines sand, palm trees, and almond trees. Pelicans and other seabirds can also often be seen searching for food in the sea.

The route continues to the Río Lajas. A bridge crosses the river and provides an opportunity to observe birds such as egrets, herons, and kingfishers. There is also a trail of approximately three kilometers that leads upstream to a small waterfall.

The Higuerón de Cabuya

Shortly after the Río Lajas, visitors encounter another natural attraction: the Higuerón de Cabuya. This enormous strangler fig stands out for its size and for the way its roots and branches spread around the trunk.

The tree reaches nearly 40 meters in height and has an approximate diameter of 22 meters. It is considered one of the largest strangler figs in Costa Rica. About seven kilometers after Montezuma, visitors reach the town of Cabuya, from where they can continue toward Isla Cementerio and other attractions in the area.

A Cemetery Between the Forest and the Sea

Isla Cementerio brings together two elements that characterize this region of the Nicoya Peninsula: the memory of the communities that inhabited the territory and the natural richness of its coast.

Its tide-dependent access, ancient burial practices, local legends, and opportunities to observe marine life make the island a distinctive stop along the route between Montezuma and Cabo Blanco.

About seven decades ago, Montezuma was a small port used to transport agricultural products from communities in the surrounding mountains. At the time, it was a quiet, sparsely populated place surrounded by the natural landscapes of the peninsula.

From an agricultural port to a fishing village

Montezuma’s history changed during the 1970s, when a road was built connecting Paquera with Cóbano. This new route made land transportation easier and reduced Montezuma’s importance as a shipping point for agricultural products from the region. Over time, the old port became less significant. Montezuma then entered a new stage as a fishing community before beginning to attract visitors interested in its beaches and natural landscapes.

Tourism developed gradually. For much of its recent history, the town remained relatively isolated and maintained a quiet pace of life. Electricity did not reach Montezuma until 1986, reflecting the isolation that characterized the community for decades. With the arrival of new services and visitors, Montezuma began to develop into the destination we know today. Despite these changes, nature remains one of the main elements of its identity.

Montezuma and sustainable tourism

Tourism growth has also raised questions about how to develop the community without damaging the ecosystems that surround it. The Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Montezuma (ADIM) promotes community and visitor participation in sustainable tourism initiatives. This approach considers the environmental, economic, and sociocultural aspects of tourism.

The goal is to find a balance between tourism, the protection of natural resources, and the needs of the local population. In a community whose economy depends largely on its natural attractions, conservation is also directly connected to its economic future.

The principle of acting locally is especially important in Montezuma. Decisions concerning urban growth, tourism, and environmental protection can affect both the community and the peninsula’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

The challenge of urban growth

The Nicoya Peninsula has experienced an increase in tourism and real estate development. This growth presents challenges for communities seeking to protect the ecosystems that have helped make the region a tourist destination.

In Montezuma, any new development must take into account the forests, beaches, rivers, and protected areas nearby. It is also important to consider local communities and the legal framework for environmental protection.

Conservation does not depend solely on national parks. Natural reserves, wildlife refuges, and other conservation initiatives also contribute to maintaining the peninsula’s ecosystems.

Cabo Blanco: A landmark in conservation

One of the region’s most important natural areas is Cabo Blanco National Park, located south of Montezuma. Cabo Blanco was established in 1963, before the national park system began to take shape during the 1970s. Its creation set an important precedent for the protection of Costa Rica’s natural ecosystems.

The area protects approximately 1,172 hectares of land and 1,700 hectares of marine territory. Its forests, beaches, and marine environments form part of an important natural corridor at the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula. From Montezuma, visitors can travel toward Cabuya and continue to the park entrance. The route offers an opportunity to experience some of the natural landscapes surrounding the community.

Cabo Blanco is also closely connected to the history of conservation in Costa Rica. The initiative to protect this territory grew from the work of conservationists Nicolás Wessberg and Karen Mogensen, who played a fundamental role in establishing the reserve.

Nicolás Wessberg Absolute Natural Reserve

The legacy of Nicolás Wessberg is also present in another protected area near Montezuma. The Nicolás Wessberg Absolute Natural Reserve was established in 1994 and protects approximately 63 hectares of tropical forest and coastal areas at the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula.

The reserve was named after the Swedish conservationist in recognition of his work to protect the region’s ecosystems. Its location also highlights the close relationship between Montezuma and the natural areas surrounding it. Part of the reserve can be reached by walking from Montezuma Beach.

Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge

Another conservation area near Montezuma is the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers approximately 295 hectares and encompasses several different natural environments. Its territory includes forest, rivers, beaches, and coastal areas along the Pacific.

The area is also characterized by rock formations along the coast and natural spaces that provide habitat for various species. Romelia is another example of the conservation efforts taking place around Montezuma. These initiatives help preserve natural areas in a region where tourism and development continue to grow.

Curú and the peninsula’s biodiversity

About 20 minutes from Montezuma lies Curú, a farm and conservation area located in the southern part of the Nicoya Peninsula. Curú stands out for the variety of environments found within its territory. It contains tropical dry and wet forests, as well as coastal and marine ecosystems.

The protection of different habitats allows a wide variety of species to thrive in the area. More than 230 bird species, 78 mammal species, 87 reptile species, and more than 500 plant species have been recorded there. In addition to its ecological importance, Curú has been presented as an example of how conservation and productive activities can coexist within a sustainable development model.

A town shaped by nature

The history of Montezuma cannot be separated from the changes experienced by the Nicoya Peninsula. It began as a small port used to transport agricultural products. It later became a fishing community and, over the decades, a tourist destination known for its beaches and laid-back atmosphere.

However, the nature surrounding the town remains a fundamental part of its identity.
