Canyons’ Caverns at the Villa Amphitheater: History and Art in Costa Rica

Canyons’ Caverns at the Villa Amphitheater
In an old quarry on the banks of the Virilla River in Ciudad Colón, you will find one of Costa Rica’s most unique tourist attractions: the Villa Amphitheater and its canyon caves.
The Villa Amphitheatre has been transformed into a network of more than 500 meters of underground corridors, completely excavated by hand. These caverns have been carefully decorated to offer visitors a themed tour that goes beyond the visual.
Canyons’ Caverns : eight themed rooms
The tour, which lasts approximately 40 minutes, allows visitors to explore at least eight main rooms, each with its own theme inspired by different cultures and historical periods. Some of the most notable spaces include:
- Dante’s Inferno, based on “The Divine Comedy,” with figures and scenes evoking the descent into the literary underworld.
- Catacombs and Chapel, which recreate the atmosphere of ancient underground cemeteries and religious shrines.
- The Egyptian Room and the interior of the Mayan pyramid at Palenque, with replicas of sculptures, murals such as the one at Bonampak, and the tomb of Pakal.
- The underground city of Cappadocia, the Moai statues of Easter Island, the Nefertiti Room, and spaces dedicated to medieval torture, the Muses, and the enigmatic Oráculum.

These settings, steeped in art, history, and mysticism, take visitors on a journey between the ancient and the contemporary.
Accessibility, comfort and panoramic views
The Villa Amphitheater was designed to be accessible to everyone. It features ramps, wooden floors, handrails, good lighting, and ventilation, ensuring comfort and safety for visitors of all ages and abilities. It also offers services such as Wi-Fi, security, and facilities for private events.
This isn’t just about what’s underground: above ground, there are gardens, viewpoints with amazing views of the Virilla River canyon.
Although the themes of the caves do not focus exclusively on Costa Rican folklore, the tour evokes the mystery and supernatural elements present in local legends, such as souls in torment or beings that inhabit caves and rivers. Thus, the Villa Amphitheater connects global cultural richness with the ancestral spirit of Costa Rica.
How to get there?
Villa Amphitheater is located in Ciudad Colón, 600 meters west of the Fresh Market in Brasil de Mora. It is an accessible, safe place full of stories waiting to be discovered underground.
