Chicharrón Fair 2025: Puriscal

The canton of Puriscal, renowned for its tradition of pork production, is once again becoming the gastronomic epicenter of Costa Rica with the 2025 Chicharrón Fair. From November 29 to December 8.
A tribute to the flavors of Puriscal
The organizers, who belong to the Cantonal Union of Development Associations, report massive attendance in the first days of the event. Early in the morning, vendors light their stoves and prepare freshly made pork rinds, filling the air with the irresistible aroma of cooking pork.
Diners enjoy the classic dish of crispy pork rinds with meat, accompanied by fried yuca, tortillas, and a squeeze of lemon. Other delicacies are also offered, such as chorizos and salchichones, made using recipes passed down through generations of local butchers and cooks.
One of the most eagerly awaited events is the “Best Chicharrón” contest, which will take place on December 7. Participants will compete for the title with versions that will be evaluated according to their flavor, texture, and culinary tradition.
Fun for everyone
Apart from the food, the fair offers a varied entertainment program:
- Sports tournaments and beach volleyball championship
- CrossFit Competitions
- Kids’ shows and pet contests
- Mechanical bull riding and 4×4 vehicle demonstrations
- Traditional horse parade through the streets of the town
When night falls, the atmosphere fills with music and celebration, with concerts by national artists, cultural performances, karaoke, and comedy shows. The lighting of the Christmas tree and a special concert marked the official start of the festive season in Puriscal.
An event with history and community roots
The Chicharrón Fair was created in 1999 to highlight Puriscal’s culinary value and support small producers. Although it was paused during the pandemic years, today it is back with a vengeance and has established itself as a nationally renowned gastronomic festival.
This event is supported by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and also includes craft exhibitions, sales of local products, and displays of regional history through photographs and cultural exhibits.

Accessible and outdoors
Admission is free, and the central park area is designed to facilitate movement between food stalls, stages, and activity areas. In addition, there are improvised bars and canteens nearby for those who wish to enjoy drinks during the day.
Puriscal welcomes visitors from all over the country, especially from the Central Valley. Many arrive by car or on buses that make frequent trips to the area. Due to high demand, organizers recommend arriving early to avoid lines at the most popular food outlets.
Rurality, tourism, and community unity
Surrounded by mountains, pleasant weather, and beautiful landscapes, Puriscal seduces those seeking a break from urban life. The fair promotes rural tourism and contributes to local commerce, thanks to the large influx of visitors who fill the canton’s hotels, cafes, and restaurants.
Beyond the flavors and music, the event stands out for its ability to strengthen local identity. Families and friends share food, stories, and traditions that remain alive despite the passage of time. Some vendors even opt for lighter versions of chicharrón, showcasing the evolution of regional cuisine without losing its essence.
