Travelers passing through Juan Santamaría International Airport now have a new opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s cultural roots, thanks to the launch of the Alajuela City Tour. AERIS, the airport operator, presented this initiative with the aim of directly connecting the terminal with the neighboring city, turning layovers and waiting times into experiences of authentic discovery.

The tour begins at the airport itself and takes participants to some of Alajuela’s most iconic historical sites. Among the first stops is the Juan Santamaría Monument, dedicated to the national hero who fought in the Battle of Rivas in 1856, as well as Carlos Luis Fallas Boulevard. Visitors then move on to Central Park, a popular meeting place surrounded by lush mango trees, before entering the Juan Santamaría Historical and Cultural Museum, where exhibits and stories delve into regional history. The tour concludes at Tomás Guardia Square.

The proposal brings together students, artisans, and entrepreneurs from Alajuela.

The tours are led by students from the Hospitality and Gastronomy program at the National Technical University (UTN), who gain practical experience while sharing their knowledge. They highlight details that enrich the visit, from anecdotes about the independence struggles to local customs. During the tour, travelers enjoy samples of specialty coffees grown in the area and presentations of folk dances that reflect Costa Rica’s cultural heritage.

One of the stops on the tour is the Alajuelense Artisans’ Shop, located in Tomás Guardia Square, where handmade products are displayed and sold. These links make it possible to formalize small businesses, generate employment, and increase the canton’s appeal to tourists. The integration of artisans, entrepreneurs, and cultural groups creates a network that benefits the community and promotes sustainable development.

Juan Santamaría International Airport promotes cultural experiences

AERIS designed the tour with the unique characteristics of the airport environment in mind. For $40 per person, the package includes round-trip transportation, a professional guide, insurance, refreshments, and Fast Track to speed up the security process when returning to the airport. In addition, luggage remains secure on the premises under standard protocols at no additional charge. The tour is offered twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., to accommodate different flight schedules.

The initiative is part of efforts to position Alajuela as a leading destination within the national tourism landscape. Its proximity to the main point of entry into the country makes it a stop for those seeking to explore beyond traditional destinations. Public institutions, academics, businesses, and residents collaborated on this project with the aim of improving public spaces, strengthening commerce, and supporting the community.

Those who wish to participate can obtain more information at the counters located in the airport lobby, where staff provide assistance with reservations and guidance on how to integrate the tour into travel plans.
