Territorio de Zaguates: The Land of Stray Dogs in Costa Rica

In the mountains of Heredia, Costa Rica, there is a paradise for animal lovers: Territorio de Zaguates, also known as The Land of the Stray Dogs. This non-profit, no-kill shelter is considered the largest in the world dedicated exclusively to stray dogs, and currently houses around 1,000 rescued dogs.
A shelter with heart
Territorio de Zaguates is run by a Costa Rican-American couple committed not only to rescue, but also to education and awareness about animal welfare. Their mission goes beyond providing a temporary home for abandoned dogs: they seek to bring about a cultural change in the way Costa Ricans view and treat animals. They actively promote spaying and neutering, responsible care, and respect for all dogs, regardless of breed.
What is a “Zaguate”?
At the same time, many zaguates have been historically underestimated compared to purebred dogs and considered more as working animals than as family members. Many zaguates have historically been undervalued compared to purebred dogs and considered working animals rather than family members.
Territorio de Zaguates seeks to break down these prejudices, showcasing the courage, beauty, and unconditional love that mixed-breed dogs offer.
Territorio de Zaguates: walking among hundreds of dogs
One of the most memorable moments this place offers is its public tours, where visitors can walk along mountain trails accompanied by hundreds of happy dogs, running, playing, and enjoying their freedom. The experience of being surrounded by such a large pack is unforgettable and deeply moving.
The shelter reopened its doors to the public in June 2025. For tour schedules and details, we recommend following their official Facebook page.

How to get there
The territory is located approximately one hour from San José, near Carrizal de Alajuela, but keep in mind that there is no bus service to the refuge. It is located in a mountainous area, so it is necessary to arrive by private vehicle or coordinate with other visitors.
Cómo apoyar: donar, adoptar o ser voluntario
Territorio de Zaguates operates as a non-profit organization registered in the United States and relies heavily on donations. You can make a financial contribution through its Facebook page or its official website.
If you are interested in adopting, they offer personalized guidance on the process. They also need foster families to provide temporary love and care for rescued dogs that are in the process of recovery.
The heart and soul of the shelter is Álvaro, one of its founders, affectionately known as the “leader of the pack.” All the dogs follow him devotedly, and his connection with them is evident in every step he takes around the Territory.
