Tours unique in Costa Rica beyond the canopy: experiences you must try

When we think of tourism in Costa Rica, the first image that usually comes to mind is that of the famous zip lines crossing the jungle. However, this relatively recent attraction only began in 1997, in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Before that time, tourism revolved mainly around the National Park system, which began with the Poás Volcano in 1970, followed by Manuel Antonio in 1972 and others throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Activities such as sport fishing, rafting, and surfing had already put the country on the international tourist map. Today, the story is very different. The variety of experiences is immense: suspension bridges, rappelling down waterfalls, hiking, volcano climbing, boat tours, coffee and food tours, cultural shows, and yoga classes, from Hatha to Ashtanga. As tourism has grown, so have the adventure options.

If you want to go beyond the typical itinerary, here are five adventure tours you shouldn’t miss in Costa Rica:

1. Cave tours

Perfect for lovers of underground exploration, these tours take visitors through underground rivers, bat colonies, and amazing rock formations. They are always conducted with specialized guides, with the Arenal Volcano area being one of the most popular spots for this activity.

2. Alligator tours

A classic attraction on the Tárcoles River, these tours allow visitors to get a close-up view of the enormous crocodiles that inhabit its banks. Currently, due to reconstruction projects on the bridge over the river, possible changes to the location of these tours are being studied, making it even more interesting to enjoy this experience while it remains in its traditional setting.

3. Night tours to observe bioluminescence

Sailing at night through the Golfo de Nicoya or along the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula offers an almost magical experience: the water lights up with flashes produced by bioluminescent plankton. It is a natural spectacle that few forget, considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

4. Bungee jumping
