Where is the Irazú Volcano?

Although it is an active volcano, its last significant eruption was in 1994 and it currently remains dormant, although fumaroles can be seen in the main crater.

The park has two main areas that offer very different experiences:

Crater Sector

This is the most visited and touristy area. From here, you can follow easy, well-marked trails to several viewpoints:

  • Main Crater: a gigantic crater 1,050 meters in diameter with an emerald green lagoon inside.
  • Diego de la Haya Crater: a second crater with a small blue lagoon.
  • Playa Hermosa Crater: the smallest crater, covered in ash, ideal for walking around its surface.

This area has a café, restrooms, information center, and parking. It is recommended to arrive very early in the morning, as clouds tend to cover the craters as the day progresses. Bring warm clothing: temperatures range from 5 to 9 °C, and rain is frequent.

Tip: If the sky is clear, head to the crater viewpoint first (accessible by car via a parallel detour) to get a full view before it clouds over.

Prusia Sector

Ideal for those looking for walks in the heart of nature. It has 16 km of trails of varying difficulty levels. It is a good option if you want a quieter, wooded environment.

To visit Prussia, a 4×4 vehicle is ideal. The turnoff is located about 12 km before the entrance to the Crater Sector.

How to get to Irazú Volcano

By rental car

This is the most convenient option if you are traveling around the country. From San José, take the road to Cartago (passing through Taras, Tierra Blanca, Potrero Cerrado, and San Juan de Chicuá, Route 219). Be sure to check the route on your GPS and avoid unnecessary detours on longer secondary roads.

By bus

There is a daily bus that leaves San José at 8:00 a.m. from Calle 1-3, Avenida 2 (in front of Hotel Costa Rica). The return trip is at 12:00 p.m. from the park. This is an economical option, although you will have limited time for your visit.

On an organized tour

A perfect option if you don’t want to worry about logistics. You can book a guided tour to the Irazú Volcano, which often includes the Orosi Valley and Lankester Gardens.

  • Hours: Open every day of the year from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Last admission: 2:00 p.m. (Crater Sector) / 1:00 p.m. (Prussia Sector)
  • Admission: International visitors: $15 USD. National visitors: ₡1000 colones.
  • Parking: ₡2,000 colones, payable at the park café/shop.

Important: Tickets can only be purchased online through the official website of SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas). You must register, select the park and time slot, and present the QR code on your mobile device or printed out upon arrival.
